Professor Richard Lutz of Rutgers University returned to speak about

aspects of his 2006 expedition to an active volcanic ridge in the Pacific.  

The title of the talk was "The Mid-Ocean Ridge Erupts in 2006!"

About our speaker:

 

Dr. Richard A. Lutz is a Professor in the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences at Rutgers University.  He received his PhD from the University of Maine.  His current primary research interests are focused on the ecology of deep-sea hydrothermal vents throughout the world's oceans. Of particular interest has been documentation of biological and geological succession in these hydrothermal systems. As part of an NSF-funded initiative, he produced, in conjunction with commercial filmmakers, an IMAX-format film entitled "Volcanoes of the Abyss".

The Fall Meeting of the Royal Society of Chemistry, (U.S. Section) was held at the Brookshire Suites Hotel in Baltimore on Saturday September 23, 2006. All members wer welcome and encouraged to attend an evening to begin the fall season with fellowship, stimulating discussion, and a pleasant meal.  The Brookshire Suites Hotel is located within walking distance of the Baltimore Inner Harbor, which is a historic port and landmark of Baltimore.  Around the Inner Harbor are the National Aquarium (for which a Saturday afternoon group visit was arranged.  The Baltimore Maritime Museum that includes the USS Constellation, the last United States Civil War ship still floating, the Maryland Science Center, and many opportunities for shopping and dining were all close by.  For baseball fans, Oriole Park at Camden Yards is near by and the Orioles were playing the Minnesota Twins that weekend.  There is also a water taxi that connects the Inner Harbor with Fort McHenry and other points in the city.
